History of the Badminton game

Badminton is a racket sport played using rackets to hit a shuttlecock across a net. Although it may be played with larger teams, the most common forms of the game are "singles" (with one player per side) and "doubles" (with two players per side). ... The flight of the shuttlecock gives the sport its distinctive nature.

The badminton game was invented in India in a version called poona. British army officers learned the game about 1870. The game is named for Badminton, the country estate of the dukes of Beaufort in Gloucestershire, England, where it was first played about 1873. The roots of the sport can be traced to ancient Greece, China, and India, and it is closely related to the old children's game battledore and shuttlecock.

The game was a hit and soon became popular among the British elite. People began calling the new party sport “the Badminton game.” The sport of badminton has its origins in ancient civilisations in Europe and Asia. The ancient game known as battledore (bat or paddle) and shuttlecock probably originated more than 2000 years ago. In the 1600s Battledore and Shuttlecock was an upper class pastime in England and many European countries.
